I’m 25 years old, and my mom just gave me Riley for Christmas. She wasn’t sure if I would like it or not, because I haven’t played with dolls in decades, but I’m unspeakably grateful she decided to buy it anyways. I couldn’t hold back my tears when I first saw Riley. I didn’t know why I was getting so emotional, so I took her to my bedroom and cried and processed. The loneliness, confusion, and other-ness I felt growing up was gently being called forth and rewritten. I couldn’t stop thinking, “she looks like me”. To me, Riley is a symbol & reminder that my Asian-ness is allowed to be celebrated and that there’s a place for mixed race Asian women. I’m not alone in my mixed Asian heritage, and I don’t have to assimilate to anything. I love being a part of a growing community of mixed Asian girls, and I love to see us represented & celebrated. Riley is MORE than I expected. I'm a Vietnamese/white mother, and I bought her for my daughter. However, I was not expecting her to help heal a part of ME, but she did. My toddler took Jilly everywhere with her after receiving the doll as a gift. My mother said she loved the Jilly doll as soon as she saw her and was so glad she could give her granddaughter a doll that looks like us. She couldn't find dolls like this when I was growing up and so many other grandmas she has met have had the same experience. My daughter dresses Jilly up in her own clothes so I was thrilled to win the Jilly outfit giveaway. The hat and jacket are a great addition to the Jilly line. My husband got this doll for our daughter for Christmas. We are Japanese American and our daughter went to an all Japanese nursery school. She is now in kindergarten and she’s definitely more aware that she looks a little different from most of her friends. I wish I had Jilly Bing when I was a kid, but I’m grateful to be able to get one for my daughter. My daughter and I were at an event and got to see Jilly Bing in person. She’s never been too interested in dolls and I thought she might be too old for them now. But I’ve never seen her look at a toy this way before. When I asked her why she likes Jilly Bing so much, she replied, “because she looks like you, mommy.
